La Romana - Dominican Republic

The area has become an increasingly popular tourist attraction since the late 1990s mainly due to its fine beaches. Gregorio Luperon International Airport is Puerto Plata's airport and is less than a 20-minute drive from most hotels. Luperon, Maimon, Cofresi, Playa Dorada, Costa Dorada are the main tourism sights, located near the city of Puerto Plata and the beach towns of Sosua and Cabarete are about half an hour away. These towns offer world class water sports. Visitors to Puerto Plata can golf at Playa Grande and Rio San Juan. One of the benefits of visiting Puerto Plata is at Santiago, the Dominican Republic's second city, is only a two hour drive.

Some great attractions include Ocean World Park, which is 15 minutes west from the city of Puerto Plata, marine park was built into a spectacular location that is framed by the multi-tonal blues of the Atlantic Ocean. The park features the world's largest custom-made dolphin lagoon, swimmable aquarium, sea lion encounters, shark interaction pool, tiger feeding area and birds area, in addition to a large man-made beach and marina.

Other attractions in Puerto Plata include San Felipe Fort built by the Spaniards in the 16th Century. Puerto Plata Lighthouse is agreat sight to visit as well as the Brugal Rum Factory. The factory was built in 1879, Brugal Rum Factory, the largest in the Dominican Republic and third largest producer of sugar cane rum. A tour can be taken to observe part of the manufacturing process.

Visitors can also take a tour of the Amber Museum (Calle Duarte 61). The museum is located in an 1919-built mansion and shows off one of the better collections of amber anywhere in the world. The Taino Art Museum (Arawak Plaza, Calle Beller) is great for insights into the lives of the settlers of the island when Columbus and the Spaniards arrived.

Adventurous travelers can visit the beach of Punta Rucia or the settlement of La Isabela, one of the oldest in the New World.
