Santiago - Dominican Republic
Founded in 1495 during the first wave of European colonization of the New World, today Santiago de Los Caballeros is the second largest metropolis in the Dominican Republic. It is located in the North-central region of the Dominican Republic known as Cibao valley.
Santiago is located on a hilly terrain in the middle of the Cibao Valley in the Central Region of the Dominican Republic, one of the most fertile lands found in the island.
Among some of Santiago's attractions include the Estadio Cibao, home of the Aguilas Cibaenas. During the winter league season fans can see some of Major League Baseball's brightest stars shine. The Monumento de Santiago is also a must see attraction when in Santiago. Renamed the "Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration", in remembrance of the Independence Restoration War of 1863, in which the Dominican Republic regained its independence from Spain. It has also become a meeting point for of Santiago's youth to see and be seen. Cars are parked and music from vehicles creates the atmosphere of an outdoor discotheque.
El Centro Leon focuses on Dominican and Caribbean culture and is a great cultural attraction to see in Santiago. It is also home of art exhibitions and international artists. The Museo del Tabaco and the Museo Folklorico Yoryi Morel are well worth seeing while in Santiago.
Part of Santiago's charm is it's distinctive accent and a relatively slower pace than life in Santo Domingo. Santiago is also know for being home to many Dominican Americans who have their roots in the Cibao Valley. The city is serviced by the Cibao International Airport and is only a two hour drive from Santo Domingo and a two hour drive from Puerto Plata.
