Puerto Plata - Dominican Republic
Puerto Plata is for vacationers that appreciate the green lushness of the landscape and seek days full of varied activities. A drive along the north coast will bring visitors to explore from where Columbus built his first settlement on his discovery trip (La Isabela) in 1492 to the West to the hilltop botanical gardens of the La Isabela, right in the city, to the collection of beaches and beach towns that hug the shoreline towards the East.
A foot tour of Puerto Plata city itself takes visitors to admire the more than 150 Victorian historical buildings that date from the early 1800s. But the picture-perfect beaches east of the city are what have placed this destination on the tourist map.
Many beaches span the north coast shoreline, including the well known Playa Dorada beach and its hotel complex (with its own golf course) and Costa Dorada just east of Puerto Plata city. Both Playa Dorada and Costa Dorada are now certified Blue Flag beaches for the quality of their waters and beach management systems.
To the East is Sosua, popular with swimmers, and the fun beach of Cabarete for windsurfing, surfing, kiteboarding and laser sailing enthusiasts. Even further east are the sprawling beaches of the Playa Grande area, the Gri Gri mangroves system, and the world famous Playa Grande golf course.
