San Cristobal - Dominican Republic

San Cristobal is a large city, located half an hour west of Santo Domingo.

The province is home to the Pomier Caves, regarded as one of the largest visitable cave systems in the Caribbean. An Anthropological Reserve, these caves are the specifically protected subterranean ecosystem as this is the most important pre-Columbian site in the Caribbean. More than 6,000 pictographs have been recorded and around 500 petroglyps spanning several distinct indian groups. Guided cave visits can be arranged with the Espeleogrupo de Santo Domingo cave group.

The Palenque Beach and the Balneario La Toma, the collection of pools that feeds from Haina River waters, are popular with noisy local crowds on weekends, but show off their best on weekdays.

Another attraction is the old sugar plantation at Boca de Nigua.

Nearby Bani features the Bani Dunes, located between the Las Calderas Navy Base and Las Salinas beach area. These dunes reach heights of more than 35 meters, and span land from East to West of 15 kms and 3 kms from North to South.

Bani is also for stopping at one of the many shops along the highway that sell delicious Dominican sweets prepared with milk, coconut and fruit ingredients.
