Barahona - Dominican Republic

Barahona is for adventure travelers that have the time to spend to discover one of the most biodiverse areas in the Caribbean.

The town has a handful of good restaurants accessible from the main road that heads to Pedernales, its other half.

Barahona boasts the highway with the most spectacular views in the entire Caribbean, composites of three and four color blues blending into the horizon, the largest lake in the Caribbean at more than 300 square kms. It is about expanses of rock beaches that are better for gazing than for swimming, because of the undertows. Its lush tropical forests are home to major coffee and tropical fruit plantations.

But Barahona is also site of the country's larimar mines, the turquoise stone that makes such lovely jewelry. A visit to the salt and the gypsum mines are also recommended for those who have more time.

Barahona attractions include: Las Caritas archaeological site located on the north side of the highway that borders Enriquillo Lake. A trail leads to the smiling and sad faces etched by Indians into the rock.

The Cabral-Polo Panoramic Highway features the Magnetic Hill at Polo, where cars seem to travel backwards against all logic.
